Includes a downloadable 40 page manual with detailed illustrations and explanations that will support parents and teachers who are using the ‘Casey the Caterpillar Handwriting Process’.   The rationale behind the process is clearly explained and the significance of scaffolding the learning for children is presented in a practical way. The importance of preventing cognitive overload for young children is central to the sequence of steps outlined in the ‘Casey the Caterpillar Handwriting Process’. The manual explains the significance of firstly introducing the children to the process through an oral story. It then builds upon this foundation by introducing the visual elements of the story. The auditory-visual connections are then made and this is further developed by the introduction of a motor component – connecting the auditory-visual components through producing shapes on a chalkboard. Patterns are made, shapes are dictated and the motor domain is further developed by recording what is heard. Finally, the shapes are connected and at this point, the connected shapes form letters. Throughout this process, the learning remains connected for children and the common language developed through the shared story of ‘Casey the Caterpillar’ ensures that children are not overloaded with unreasonable expectations in their efforts to develop correct letter formation. The sequence of teaching is outlined and pictures outlining teaching demonstrations are included.  In addition,  practice sheets are also included for both lower case and upper case letters. Guidelines for using the student practice sheets are also included. The guidelines and sheet samples are suitable for the various fonts used throughout Australia and New Zealand.    For further information about ‘Casey the Caterpillar Handwriting Process’, click here.
