The story of ‘Casey the Caterpillar’ was developed by Barbara Brann more than three decades ago when she was working as a teacher in a classroom in the Northern Territory. She saw firsthand, the difficulty young children were experiencing in learning to write. She also observed that many children were not able to concentrate on ‘what’ they were writing, because they were in cognitive overload trying to remember ‘how’ to form letters. ‘How do we make it simple?” thought Barbara, and ‘How do we make it memorable?’ and ‘How can the skill of handwriting be developed quickly to automaticity – and allow children to concentrate on what they are writing?” The story of ‘Casey the Caterpillar’ is Barbara Brann’s practical solution to help young children get it right from the start. Barbara’s answer was obviously also an answer that many other teachers and parents were seeking and during the past twenty years, this story has supported young children learning to write in every state and Territory of Australia, throughout New Zealand and across many other countries including Fiji, Tonga, Singapore, Thailand, Qatar, Bahrain, South Africa, United States, Sweden, Norway and the UK. It simply works! The story of ‘Casey the Caterpillar’ provides a context for children to quickly identify, recall and reproduce the shapes that are a fundamental basis for correct letter formation. Children develop a familiarity with the story of ‘Casey the Caterpillar’ and are able to recognise and recall the names of shapes that are presented in a meaningful way throughout the text. The story provides children with a logical reason for the formation of shapes in a specific way, thus embedding from the outset, the knowledge of the correct formation of letters. The approach provides significant scaffolding to children so that they can master the correct reproduction of the component shapes before joining them to form letters and before refining those letters to conform to the script being taught in their region. The learning process remains connected for young children and the scaffolding ensures that children are never overloaded with unreasonable expectations to form letters that require multiple steps to be remembered, recalled and reproduced. The shapes are easily reproduced ensuring that the letters are formed correctly from the start. In addition to the ‘Casey the Caterpillar’ story book, an oral story guide and quick reference notes are also included. The oral story guide provides important guidelines to be followed when introducing the story to young children. This guide encourages children from the outset to participate in a story that is relevant, contextual and entertaining. The concepts of directionality are firmly established from the outset when teachers/parents follow the oral story guide. The approach is simple and fun too!! A quick reference guide provides parents and teachers with the support to quickly build the foundations required for children to form correct letter formations. It is strongly recommended that the Teaching Manual (USB) also be used to inform the teaching of ‘Casey the Caterpillar’ Handwriting Process. A teaching DVD is also available and provides demonstrations of the teaching process. It is recommended that individual chalkboards be used in the initial stages of developing the shapes required for correct letter formation.
