This selection of resources will equip you with all you need to know to introduce to students the ‘Casey the Caterpillar’ process of correct letter formation.  It includes a choice of large or small ‘Casey the Caterpillar’ story book, complete with an oral story guide and quick reference cards;  the Teacher’s Manual explaining the entire process of teaching and a DVD with explanations by Barbara Brann and teaching demonstrations of  the ‘Casey the Caterpillar’ handwriting process in the classroom.

A great combination of resources to ensure that children will be supported in the important process of learning how to correctly form letters in the early stages of handwriting.    The story provides a contextualised approach to introducing basic shapes of the alphabet that will eventually connect to form letters.   Becoming  familiar with the basic handwriting shapes within a fun story scaffolds children’s learning so that they do not experience cognitive overload when trying to remember and do too many things at once.   The ‘Casey the Caterpillar’ Handwriting Process is structured to respect the number of memory spaces that young children have and to work within this capacity,   gradually developing skills to the level of automaticity before children are expected to do more.  The Teacher’s manual – contained on a USB stick explains in detail the rationale behind the teaching process and gives teachers a framework of understanding on which to build their approach to teaching early literacy skills to young children.   In addition to the Teacher’s Manual, the USB stick also includes practice sheets suitable for young children to begin writing their shapes and eventually their letters.  The practice sheets are in a number of different width sizes so that as children’s fine motor control and handwriting competencies increase, the width of the line decreases to scaffold the handwriting process to achieve greater and greater control.   The DVD provides teachers with practical demonstrations of what the ‘Casey the Caterpillar’ handwriting process actually looks like in the classroom.  Barbara Brann, the developer of ‘Casey the Caterpillar’ handwriting process features in the DVD, sharing insights from the decades of experience she has had working with classroom teachers and young children in the area of early literacy development.    The DVD also shows classroom situations modelling the ‘Casey the Caterpillar’ process in action.  The combination of these resources will  provide all educators with the background knowledge and examples so that they can have a go themselves and support young children to get it right from the start.
